Bryan Chapell - What Is The Gospel?

What is the gospel? Bryan Chapell explains that the gospel is the message that God sent a savior to rescue broken people, restore creation's glory, and rule over all with compassion and justice. This new booklet from the Gospel Coalition examines the gospel's proclamation that the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ provides for those who believe all that God requires and leads to eternal life.

But this ancient, unfolding story of salvation is not limited to personal spiritual realities. God's rescue, restoration, and rule through Christ renew hearts, empower lives, and transform the world. What Is the Gospel? examines how the salvation that unfolds in Scripture grants to God's people the right to participate in the furthering of the kingdom that transforms all things for his glory.

What Is the Gospel? offers a thoughtful explanation for point 6 of the Gospel Coalition's confessional statement. The Gospel Coalition is an evangelical renewal movement dedicated to a scripture-based reformation of ministry practices.

Various Authors - The Missing Jesus:Rabbinic Judaism And The New Testament

How can Jesus be said to be "missing"? The Church has consistently referred itself to conceptions of Jesus during its history, and the world of scholarship has seen a renaissance in the study of Jesus over the past twenty years. In fact, Jesus’ place in popular culture has been surprisingly prominent as a result of recent historical study. What is "missing" is not by any means reference to Jesus: what is missing is rather an entire dimension of his identity. In order for us to understand Jesus and his profound influence on global culture, we need to see him within the context of the Judaism that was his own natural environment. No one can be assessed apart from one’s environment, but a variety of factors have isolated the study of Jesus from the study of Judaism. The "missing" Jesus is Jesus within Judaism.

James H. Charlesworth & Craig A. Evans - The Pseudepigrapha And Early Biblical Interpretation

This book contains a number of well-written essays on the "Old Testament" "Pseudepigrapha" and how such works were first interpreted. The insights to I Enoch and Jubilees, along with 4 Ezra and various books of the Apocrypha were particularly enlightening.

It is interesting to note the possible (dis)connection between the Apostle Paul and his theory of sin entering the world through one man and the teaching in the book of Sirach that sin enters the world through the woman. Perhaps both are true? Or, perhaps, Paul was trying to address an issue that he felt was untrue?

This is one of the books that puts early Christianity in its context more than many of the others because works such as Sirach are, in this book, evaluated as being just as important and relevant as the "canon" of Scripture itself.

For those interested in early Christianity, early Judaism, the "canon" of the Bible, and the writings of the New Testament in the context they were written in, this is an essential piece of literature to have.

Charles Spurgeon - Lectures To My Students

Preachers often quote Spurgeon today because he had an ability to explain Christian truth to ordinary people with pointed, memorable statements. The people who heard and read his words were effectively taught theology and enjoyed it. He was a dogged defender of the Bible as God's truth.

There was another side to Spurgeon's Character, he had a sensitive and loving nature that was the spur to him preaching the gospel, so that as many people as possible could hear the good news about why Jesus Christ came to spend time on earth, building a church for eternity. This also showed through in his warm pasturing of his congregation and the setting up of a college for future ministers of the gospel.

Spurgeon realised that he could influence the church beyond his own lifetime if he could encourage future pastors to trust the Bible, love people and preach the truth fearlessly. To achieve this he collected his lectures to his college students and published this book. It has been a classic of pastoral theology ever since and is still used to train ministers to this day.

Archibald Alexander Hodge - Outlines Of Theology

A. A. Hodge composed Outlines of Theology for his congregation—making the tone of this succinct systematic theology more pastoral than dogmatic. Hodge credits his father’s theological wisdom, and acknowledges that conversations with his father, as well as material from his father’s sermons and lectures, has made its way into Outlines of Theology. This outline began as a series of popular lectures and sermons, which Hodge’s congregation urged him to publish for a broader audience.

Outlines of Theology attempts to orient theological discussion around a shared language. Hodge surveys the whole of theology concisely and succinctly. He covers the central doctrines, the most important moments in church history, as well as the purpose of divine revelation. Hodge also discusses ecclesiastical issues, such as baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Outlines of Theology is intended as a theological manual for preachers, a theological syllabus for students, and a clear and accessible summary of theology for those who lack the means or the time to read a more expansive systematic theology.

In 1878, a new edition of Hodge’s Outlines of Theology was finished. This expanded edition contains nearly fifty per cent more content than the first edition published in 1863. Five new chapters were added, and two were dropped. Several other chapters were rewritten or reorganized, and others were substantially enlarged. This edition also contains excerpts from relevant confessions, creeds, and classic theological works. It also benefits from fourteen years of scholarship during the intervening years.

Archibald Alexander Hodge & Benjamin B. Warfield - Inspiration

The word inspiration, as applied to the Holy Scriptures, has gradually acquired a specific technical meaning independent of its etymology. At first this word,in the sense of God-breathed,vvas used to express the entire agency of God in producing that divine element which distinguishes Scripture from all other writings. It was used in a sense comprehensive of supernatural revelation, while the immense range of providential and gracious divine activities concerning the genesis of the word of God in human language was practically overlooked. But Christian scholar have come to see that this divine element, which penetrates and glorifies Scripture at every point, has entered and become incorporated with it in very various ways, natural, supernatural and gracious, thi Dugh long courses of providential leading, as well as by direct suggestion through the spontaneous action of the souls of the sacred writers, as well as by controlling influence from A vithout.

Daniel R. Jennings - The Supernatural Occurrences Of Charles G. Finney

Charles G. Finney (1792-1875) was one of the most successful of the 19th century evangelists. His ministry efforts influenced the likes of William Booth and D. L. Moody along with a whole host of lesser known pastors, teachers, evangelists and missionaries. While his itinerant ministry has been well documented, lesser known are the miracles that he recorded experiencing in his Memoirs. Here, perhaps for the first time, an attempt has been made to compile and analyze these experiences in an attempt to answer the enduring question of whether miracles ended with the completion of the Canon of Scripture or if they will continue until the Second Coming.

Benjamín B. Warfield - Counterfeit Miracles

More than sixty years after his death B.B. Warfield's witness remains a powerful influence in main-stream Christianity simply because no successor has attained to his eminence as a biblical theologian. In his years at Princeton, 1886-1921, he was unquestionably the best-known opponent of the rationalism and anti-supernaturalism which threatened the life of the Church in the 20th Century; for him a non-miraculous Christianity was no Christianity at all. But with his breadth of vision Warfield also saw the danger of false claims to the possession of miraculous gifts - claims which have repeatedly been made both by the Church of Rome and by groups within Protestantism.

Arthur W. Pink - An Exposition Of The Sermon On The Mount

"And seeing the multitudes, He went up into a mountain, and when He was set, His disciples came unto Him; and He opened His mouth, and taught them" (5:1, 2). Yet brief as these verses be, there are several things in them which call for careful consideration. First, we must notice the place from which this Sermon was preached. "As in other things, so in this, our Lord Jesus was but ill-accommodated: He had no convenient place to preach in, any more than to lay His head on. While the scribes and Pharisees had Moses' chair to sit in, with all possible ease, honour, and state, and there corrupted the Law; our Lord Jesus, the great Teacher of truth, is driven out to the desert, and finds no better place than a 'mountain' can afford.

In this authoritative and exhaustive study, the author makes it clear that the Scriptures are God’s self-revelation, that they reveal His will for man’s life, and that they describe man’s sin and the way of redemption. The right interpretation of the Scriptures is of basic importance, the author contends, and it is exactly on this score that many denominations and church leaders
have foundered and suffered shipwreck.

Ministers and ministerial students will find their pulpit ministries strengthened and enriched by this book. The general reader will see in the Scriptures a new and deeper meaning.

Appropriately Genesis has been termed "the seed plot of the Bible," for in it we have, in germ form, almost all of the great doctrines which are afterwards fully developed in the books of Scripture which follow. This complete edition of Gleanings in Genesis is a thoughtful work on the old testament by evangelist and biblical scholar Arthur W. Pink. Gleanings in Genesis has been a popular published work for scholars and patrons of christianity for centuries. Arthur W. Pink - Regeneration Or The New Birth

Two chief obstacles lie in the way of the salvation of any of Adam's fallen descendants: bondage to the guilt and penalty of sin, bondage to the power and presence of sin; or, in other words, their being bound for Hell and their being unfit for Heaven. These obstacles are, so far as man is concerned, entirely insurmountable. This fact was unequivocally established by Christ, when, in answer to His disciples' question, "Who then can be saved?", He answered, "with men this is impossible." A lost sinner might more easily create a world than save his own soul. But (forever be His name praised), the Lord Jesus went on to say, "with God all things are possible" (Matt. 19:25, 26). Arthur Walkington Pink was an English Christian evangelist and Biblical scholar known for his staunchly Calvinist and Puritan-like teachings. Though born to Christian parents, prior to conversion he migrated into a Theosophical society and quickly rose in prominence within their ranks. His conversion came from his father's patient admonitions from Scripture. It was the verse, Proverbs 14:12, 'there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death,' which particularly struck his heart and compelled him to renounce Theosophy and follow Jesus.

Arthur W. Pink - Tithing

"There are few subjects on which the Lord's own people are more astray than on the subject of giving. They profess to take the Bible as their own rule of faith and practice, and yet in the matter of Christian finance, the vast majority have utterly ignored its plain teachings and have tried every substitute the carnal mind could devise; therefore it is no wonder that the majority of Christian enterprises in the world today are handicapped and crippled through the lack of funds. Is our giving to be regulated by sentiment and impulse, or by principle and conscience? That is only another way of asking, Does God leave us to the spirit of gratitude and generosity, or has He definitely specified His own mind and particularized what portion of His gifts to us are due to Him in return? Surely God has not left this important matter without fully making known His will!" Arthur Walkington Pink was an English Christian evangelist and Biblical scholar. Though born to Christian parents, prior to conversion he migrated into a Theosophical society, and quickly rose in prominence within their ranks. His conversion came from his father's patient admonitions from Scripture. Benjamín B. Warfield - Is Jesus God:An Argument

This little volume offers a constructive argument for the Deity of Christ. It owes its origin to an attempt by the members of a class in Princeton Theological Seminary, during the session of 1911-1912—the Centennial Session of the Seminary—to give a reasoned answer to a series of inquiries. These, taken in sequence, raised the salient questions which every one must face who undertakes to investigate historically the evidence for the Deity of Christ. These inquiries, in their order, were:—

1. Does the Christian Church teach the Deity of Christ?
2. Has the Christian Church always taught the Deity of Christ?
3. Do the New Testament writers teach the Deity of Christ?
4. Do the Evangelists represent Christ as Himself teaching His Deity?
5. Did Jesus teach His own Deity?
6. Is Christ God?

A considerable number of essays were presented on each of these topics. Those here printed were selected because they seemed to fit well into one another, and together to present a solid argument for the ultimate conclusion.

Benjamín B. Warfield - Studies In Theology

Although justly famed for his landmark defense of the divine inspiration and authority of Scripture, B.B. Warfield was a theologian with multiple interests. Studies in Theology contains articles by Warfield on a wide and fascinating variety of themes. Rich doctrinal treatments of the Atonement, the Inspiration of Scripture, Systematic Theology and Christian Supernaturalism are, perhaps, to be expected by those familiar with Warfield's reputation. But here his interests include such subjects as "The Archaeology of the Mode of Baptism" and "Charles Darwin's Religious Life". The 21 essays in this volume provide a glorious kaleidoscope of Warfield's written ministry.

Charles G. Finney - Finney's Systematic Theology

True to Scripture, true to reason, and true to life.Discover why these writings have been the impetus for revivals around the world.Students of revival agree that Charles Grandison Finney spearheaded one of America's greatest revivals and influenced the course of history. Church rolls swelled in the wake of Finney's revivals. He is often directly or indirectly credited with the conversions of around 500,000 people.Finney's theological convictions were born in the fires of revival and shaped by a keen lawyer's mind committed to the full authority of the Bible. He gave his life to promote: "The return to and practice of Biblical Christianity in the power of the Holy Spirit for the sake of God's kingdom and glory." The distinctive truths that Finney preached brought such a deep conviction of sin that today's church does well when it studies his position on the moral government of God, the nature of man, the atonement, sovereignty, attributes of love, unity of moral action and regeneration. This expanded volume represents the complete 1878 edition, two lectures of truth from the earlier 1847 and 1851 editions, a comprehensive introduction from L.G. Parkhurst, Jr., plus appendixes, a glossary, and a scripture index.

Charles Spurgeon - Christ's Incarnation The Foundation Of Christianity

“GLORY to God in the highest.” The instructive lesson to be learned from this opening note of the angels’ song is, that salvation is God’s highest glory. He is glorified in every dewdrop that twinkles in the morning sunshine. He is magnified in every wood flower that blossoms in the copse, although it is born to blush unseen of man, and may seem to waste its sweetness on the forest air. God is glorified in every bird that warbles on the trees, and in every lamb that skips in the meadows. Do not the fishes in the sea praise Him? From the tiny minnow to the huge leviathan, do not all creatures that swim in the waters laud and magnify His great Name? Do not all created things extol Him? Is there aught beneath the sky, save man, that doth not glorify God? Do not the stars exalt Him, when they write His Name in golden letters upon the azure of heaven? Do not the lightnings adore Him when they flash His brightness in arrows of light piercing the midnight darkness? Do not the thunderpeals extol Him when they roll like drums in the march, of the God of armies? Do not all things that He hath made, from the least even to the greatest, exalt Him?

Claus Westermann - What Does The Old Testament Say About God?

In his brief yet insightful volume What Does the Old Testament Say About God, Claus Westermann writes the following:

“What does the Old Testament say about God? The answer to this question has to be given from the Old Testament in its entirety. It is the task of a theology of the Old Testament to describe and view together what the Old Testament as a whole, in all its sections, says about God. The task is not correctly understood if one takes one part of the Old Testament to be the most important and gives it prominence over the others; or if one regards the whole as determined by one concept such as covenant or election or salvation; or if one asks, to begin with, what the theological center of the Old Testament is. The New Testament obviously has its center in the suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ, to which the Gospels are directed and which the Epistles take as their starting point. The Old Testament, however, has no similarity at all to this structure. It is therefore not possible to translate the problem of the theological center from the New to the Old Testament”

Arthur W. Pink - Why Four Gospels

Why four Gospels? It seems strange that such a question needs to be asked at this late date. The New Testament has now been in the hands of the Lord's people for over two thousand years, and yet, comparatively few seem to grasp the character and scope of its first four books. No part of the Scriptures has been studied more widely than have the four Gospels. Yet, the fact remains, that the peculiar design and character of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, is rarely perceived even by those most familiar with their contents. May it please God to stir up an increasing number of His people to "search" this portion of His holy Word which reveal the excellencies of His blessed Son which were so signally displayed by Him during the years that He tabernacled among men. Arthur Walkington Pink was an English Christian evangelist and Biblical scholar known for his staunchly Calvinist and Puritan-like teachings. Though born to Christian parents, prior to conversion he migrated into a Theosophical society (an occult gnostic group popular in England during that time), and quickly rose in prominence within their ranks. His conversion came from his father's patient admonitions from Scripture. It was the verse, Proverbs 14:12, 'there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death,' which particularly struck his heart and compelled him to renounce Theosophy and follow Jesus.

In this essential volume Charles Finney boldly uncovers the awful truth that today's Christians and a number of church leaders are sadly lacking in this critical gift of power. However, he does not languish in despair but offers a good deal of hope by proclaiming that spiritual power is available for every Christian and encouraging Christians to seek such power in faith. Finney emphasizes that the Holy Spirit urgently desires to take full control of your life, and he lists certain conditions that must be met before you can be filled with the Spirit and receive Power From on High.

Charles G. Finney - Revival Lectures

The twenty-two chapters of this book owe so much of their appeal to the fact that they were first preached to a visible audience. Taken down by Joshua Leavitt, they were carefully edited and annotated by the author. Consequently, they bear evidence of warm words flowing from a flaming heart.

No other book on the subject of revival has been so mightily used of God. It has been translated into many languages and circulated around the globe. Despite the length of time since the lectures were first delivered and published, so powerful are they in present-day application that they are still used as texts in many Bible schools and seminaries.

In Revival Lectures Finney explains what a revival of religion is and treats at length such related subjects as the place of faith and prayer in relation to revival; the need of the Holy Spirit; methods to be used in the quest for souls; hindrances to revivals; instructions to converts; and helpful rules for growth in grace. The principles and methods God used so mightily in Finney's day are equally effective in our own.

D. James Kennedy & Jerry Newcombe - What’s Wrong With Same Sex Marriage

In recent court decisions, the homosexual activist movement has made huge strides toward legalizing same-sex marriage in the United States. With the help of a handful of judges, a tiny fraction of our population is on the verge of redefining the institution of marriage for all of us.

This goes beyond politics - it is a moral issue. And in this book, D. James Kennedy and Jerry Newcombe offer a Christian response. The Bible is clear: Homosexuality is a sin, and marriage is for one man and one woman.

Kennedy and Newcombe use Scripture to show what God says about homosexuality and marriage. They also examine statistics and case studies that dispel many of the myths about homosexuality. They appeal to us to make an organized response to same-sex marriage--while maintaining a loving attitude toward homosexuals as human beings.

These days it's not "politically correct" to say that homosexuality is wrong. But it's not culture's responsibility to determine right and wrong. There is only one Authority who can do that, and it is up to us to stand behind His Word.

Craig A. Evans & Peter W. Flint - Eschatology, Messianism, And The Dead Sea Scrolls

Scholarly interest in intertextuality remains as keen as ever. Armed with new questions, interpreters seek to understand better the function of older scripture in later scripture. The essays assembled in the present collection address these questions. These essays treat pre-Christian texts, as well as Christian texts, that make use of older sacred tradition. They analyze the respective uses of scripture in diverse Jewish and Christian traditions. Some of these studies are concerned with discreet bodies of writings, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, while others are concerned with versions of scriptures, such as the Hebrew or Old Greek, and text critical issues. Other studies are concerned with how scripture is interpreted as part of apocalyptic and eschatology.

Early Christian Literature and Intertextuality includes essays that explore the use of Old Testament scripture in the Gospels and Acts. Other studies examine the apostle Paul's interpretation of scripture in his letters, while other studies look at non-Pauline writings and their utilization of scripture. Some of the studies in this collection show how older scripture clarifies important points of teaching or resolves social conflict.

Law, conversion, anthropology, paradise, and Messianism are among the themes treated in these studies, themes rooted in important ways in older sacred tradition.

The collection concludes with studies on two important Christian interpreters, Syriac-speaking Aphrahat in the east and Latin-speaking Augustine in the west.

He then surveys the arguments for and against the authenticity and identification of the recently discovered James Ossuary. Charles Spurgeon - Pictures From Pilgrim's Progress

Charles Spurgeon's favorite work was Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan. Spurgeon claimed he had read it over 100 times, and his wife would frequently read it to him for relaxation. He often quoted Bunyan in his sermons declaring, "Though his writings are charmingly full of poetry, yet he cannot give us his Pilgrim's Progress — that sweetest of all prose poems — without continually making us feel and say, 'Why, John Bunyan is a living Bible!' Prick him anywhere — his blood is Bible, the very essence of the Bible flows from him. He cannot speak without quoting a text, for his very soul is FULL of the Word of God."

Spurgeon first became enthralled with this classic as a small child, reading it in the attic of his grandfather's parsonage. The old wood-cut illustrations were especially interesting to the young lad, and later his sermons were saturated with references to the characters and events in the story. Thomas Spurgeon, one of his twin sons, wrote the preface to these articles which were first published in The Sword and the Trowel Magazine after Charles Haddon Spurgeon's death.

What is true Christianity? There is perhaps no better person in recent history to answer this question than Charles Finney. Finney (1792-1875) was the most powerful Christian preacher of the 1800s who sought to clearly articulate what the Scriptures say about living the true Christian life that pleases God. He fearlessly challenged his hearers to bring every aspect of their lives into obedience to God. This book contains sixteen messages of Finney that describe the essential practice of Christianity. Each message will challenge your faith in a deep way and call you to the life that God intends.

Arthur W. Pink - The Sovereignty Of God

Who is regulating affairs on this earth today-God, or the Devil? That God reigns supreme in Heaven, is generally conceded; that He does so over this world, is almost universally denied-if not directly, then indirectly. More and more are men in their philosophizing and theorizing, relegating God to the background. Take the material realm. Not only is it denied that God created everything, by personal and direct action, but few believe that He has any immediate concern in regulating the works of His own hands. Everything is supposed to be ordered according to the (impersonal and abstract) "laws of Nature". Thus is the Creator banished from His own creation. Therefore we need not be surprised that men, in their degrading conceptions, exclude Him from the realm of human affairs.

Arthur W. Pink - The Redeemer's Return

The early converts of the New Testament were instructed by the apostles to wait vigilantly for the second coming of Christ. Sadly, many of today's Christians have abandoned the task of preparing for Christ's return. In this book, Pink searches the Old and New Testament for information regarding Jesus' second coming. First, he looks at several examples of Biblical prophecies which foretell Christ's second coming. Then, he discusses the necessity of Jesus' return and explores signs leading up to His arrival. Pink closely examines Christ's first coming to gain a better understanding of the glory and power that will manifest itself in Christ's second coming. Finally, Pink discusses the events that will occur in the church and the world as a result of this momentous occasion. Redeemer's Return is designed mainly for those who are beginners in the study of prophetic and dispensational truth.

Arthur W. Pink - The Law And The Saint

It has been said that every unregenerate sinner has the heart of a Pharisee. This is true; and it is equally true that every unregenerate sinner has the heart of an Antinomian. There is no more real opposition between these apparently opposing principles, than there is between enmity and pride. Many a slothful servant has hated his master and his service, and yet had he pride and presumption enough to demand his wages. Phariseeism and Antinomianism unite, like Herod and Pilate did, against the Truth.
